Lube and Fuel Division provide laboratory analysis to provide meaningful and accurate information on lubricant/fuel and also the component condition.

FRESH / USED OIL ANALYSIS

Fresh oil analysis provide general idea of how well the oil met with required standards while used oil analysis can also provide information about condition of the machine components in operation. Oil analysis identifies contaminants, wear and additive elements. By tracking oil analysis sample results over the life of a particular machine, trends can be established which can help prevent unnecessary repair costs.

Common oil analysis packages that we usually do, consist of these parameters :

The main function of the viscosity check is to find out whether the lubricant used is the correct lubricant (according to viscosity grade), find out whether the viscosity of the lubricant is still suitable for use and to detect the possibility of contamination in the lubricant.

Water contaminants in the lubricant can come from the environment where the unit operates. Water will be a catalyst that will accelerate the formation of metal oxides in lubricants. Physically, the presence of water in the lubricant can be seen from the changing color of the lubricant that is getting turbid.

Oxidation occurs when the operating temperature of the lubricant is too high and this reaction tends to produce acid, so by knowing the level of oxidation that occurs in the lubricant we can predict whether the operating conditions of the lubricant are correct or not and can also estimate the remaining useful life of the lubricant.

This test indicates the tendency of the lubricant to form foam and the stability of the foam after it is formed. This test is useful for troubleshooting foaming problems on equipment. The foaming problem in the system can originate from mechanical system design, anti-foam additive depletion and / or contamination.

Contamination analysis of used oils detects contamination at trace levels or lower. Contaminants tested and tracked include trace metals from engine and machinery parts, which provide vital data on equipment wear and degradation.

The presence of abrasive solid particles in the lubricant cannot be tolerated because these particles will cause further damage to the components. Cleanliness test states the number of particles with a size above a certain size range (in units of microns) per fluid volume (1 or 100 ml). The particle size distribution in the report follows the rules at ISO 4406-99. Solid particles that enter the lubrication system can come from: dirt ingestion, wear particle or corrosion product.

The function of additives in lubricants is to improve the main properties in the base oil, suppress the undesirable properties of the base oil and give positive new properties to the base oil. Some additive functions include : antioxidants, rust inhibitors, dispersants, detergents, anti-wear, EP additives and foam inhibitors.

The test aims to determine the ability of the lubricant to separate from water at a certain temperature. The unit of this test is minutes. The faster the lubricant is separated from the water contaminants the better so that no water is circulating into the lubrication system.

Determining the acid content in the lubricant which can then be used as a benchmark in determining the age / lifetime of the lubricant. The high acid value in the lubricant can be caused by high oxidation or the lubricant is contaminated with fluid with high acid number.

Lubricant serves as a media retaining the process of metal wear due to friction. However, the best lubricant will also occur due to metal wear caused by friction. Wear metal checking aims to determine the metal content in the lubricant in order to draw conclusions about the source of the metal.

Test used to determine the lowest temperature at which an ignition source (small flame) that is above the surface of the lubricant causes the steam to burn. A lubricant must have a flash point above the minimum safety value required. For the analysis of used oil, the flash point value can indicate the presence of contaminants (fluid) in the lubricant.

FUEL ANALYSIS

Fuel consumption is one of the biggest expenses in a company. Ensuring fuel products and equipments always in good condition is a major priority, to guarantee its long term reliability and to avoid unexpected downtime or costly repairs. Fuel analysis can be used to verify the products properties, either to meet standard government or corporate regulations, this analysis can also be used to identify the root cause of machinery problems.

Common fuel analysis packages, the parameters are :

It’s an inverse function of a fuel’s ignition delay, the time period between the start of injection and the first identifiable pressure increase during combustion of the fuel. In a particular diesel engine, higher cetane fuels will have shorter ignition delay periods than lower Cetane fuels. Cetane numbers are only used for the relatively light distillate diesel oils. For heavy (residual) fuel oil two other scales are used, CCAI and CII.

The presence of Sulphur in fuel can increase corrosive wear during the combustion process.

It’s the temperature to which the fuel must be heated to produce an ignitable vapor-air mixture above the liquid fuel when exposed to an open flame.

Diesel fuel will always contain a certain percentage of water. It has to be within the acceptable limits, well below separation points. Water contaminants in fuel can come from the environment where the unit operates.

This is defined as the ratio of the mass of the fuel to the volume of the fuel at a reference temperature.

Viscosity is one of the most important factors which directly affects combustion quality, a high viscosity fuel leads to improper atomization which in turn leads to incomplete combustion.

To determine residue and unburned materials in fuel, which enable detection of  loss in ignition.

Test of extracting insoluble sediment on fuel, usually caused by aging.

Pour point of fuel is the temperature below which the liquid fuel loses its flow characteristics.
